Number of jobless is increasing

Another 7,000 Leicestershire people will lose their jobs by the end of this year, resulting in the longest dole queue for a generation, a business leader warned. Figures released yesterday showed the number of people claiming Jobseekers' Allowance in the city and county rose by 986 to 23,096 last month.

An increase to more than 30,000 unemployed by December will mean the claimant count will have doubled in just over a year.

The figure has now risen for 11 consecutive months and increased by 48 per cent since November. It rose by more than 3,000 in February alone.

Martin Traynor, managing director of Leicestershire Chamber of Commerce, said: "By the end of the year we will have gone through the 30,000 mark.

"The only positive thing is that the monthly increase has slowed down."

The gloomy figures were unveiled on the day Chancellor Alistair Darling revealed measures aimed at getting the unemployed back into work.

Nationally, total unemployment rose 177,000 between December and February to 2.1 million.
