Toshiba ends TV production at Plymouth
Toshiba today told staff at its Ernesettle plant in Plymouth that it is stopping all flat-screen TV production at the site, resulting in the loss of 270 jobs.
The company is concentrating its European TV production at its factory in Kobierzyce, Poland, saying it is part of a global drive "to increase economies of scale, efficiency and flexibility in the fiercely-competitive global LCD TV market".
The UK jobs are expected to go by July, but Toshiba said it would retain 50 support staff at the site, which, it claimed, would not close.
The company plans to keep the Plymouth site open to retain a core of employees to provide manufacturing and engineering expertise to the Polish factory, as well as handling the refurbishment of products which are returned from retailers due to technical or other issues.
“We have 28 years of history with Plymouth, and are indebted both to the people who have worked with us over those years, and to the wider local community. We deeply regret the loss of jobs," said Andy Bass, managing director of Toshiba Information Systems.
He added: “However, Toshiba has to keep its global manufacturing strategy under constant review in order to compete in a market which has been transformed in recent years by aggressive, price-driven competition.
"Two years ago we invested in a major LCD TV factory in Poland, supplying European products in tandem with the Plymouth factory. With the rapidly-changing global market, and with the unprecedented economic pressures we face, it makes strategic sense to centralise production management under one roof.”
The company is now in 30-day statutory redundancy consultations with its Plymouth staff.
