Recruitment industry reps call UK unemployment figure wretched and worrying as it rises by record amount
The number of unemployed rose in the UK by a record 281,000 to 2.38 million in the three months to May.
This makes the unemployment rate 7.6 per cent – the highest since the New Labour Government came to power in 1997.
The record rise means the figure is edging towards the 3m mark in 2010 as predicted by several associations including the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.
Despite many signs that the recession has bottomed out, youth unemployment (those under 24) has hit a 16 year high of 726,000.
Kevin Green, the Recruitment and Employment Confederation chief executive said: “We are concerned that with the jobless figures still rising, temporary work should remain a crucial lifeline for those wanting to get back into employment.
"Our priority now is to ensure that the implementation of the Agency Workers Directive does not damage this flow of jobs through added bureaucracy and cost.
The CIPD chief economist Dr John Philpott said: “The latest official jobs figures offer a litany of wretched new records, with the unprecedented 281,000 quarterly (March-May) rise in unemployment on the Labour Force Survey (LFS) measure the most wretched of all.
"Any optimism that unemployment will peak below 3 million next year before the jobs outlook starts to improve would appear to have evaporated.
“The record quarterly rise in LFS unemployment makes even more puzzling the trend in claimant unemployment (the number of jobless people claiming Jobseekers’ Allowance), which increased by a far less than expected 23,000 in June.”
